How to get the perfect model train layout

Model railroading is one of the most widely popular hobbies of all time and it's definitely for all ages. There are massive events and shows, because this activity has become so popular over the years, and if you have an urge to get involved, one of the most important first things to think about is your model railroad layout. You don't want to just jump in and start piecing things together. It's important that you consider several key factors before beginning, and in this hub -- that's exactly what we are going to take a look at.

With model railroad layouts you have several options to choose from. The most basic idea is the large 4 x 8 table design. This is best suited for HO scale model trains. You may even consider taking two sheets of plywood and putting them together to make an even larger world, but you do have to think about time and budget. If you plan to make most of your own scenery pieces on your own, and you are more interested in the journey rather than the destination, then this shouldn't be a problem.

Plan it first!

There is actually model railroad layout software that you can use, but this isn't necessary. You can use a simple sketch pad and pencil and draw out what your track layout will be like and where the scenery and structures will go. This is also a lot of fun!

Consider the theme. What point in time will your track take place? what's the setting? agriculture, industrial, logging town or desert? This will also help you get an idea for the size of the base that you will need.

Should I make my own table or use something around the house?

You may want to eventually do your own benchwork, meaning to construct your own model train table from the ground up. That way you can customize what you will need for the outcome of your layout.

In any case, you can use a table that you already have, or you can use a sheet of plywood placed on saw horses.

Ever Heard Of A Shelf Layout?

A shelf layout is a good option for people who are limited on space. This is a narrow shelf that will contain your model train set. It resembles a model of a model railroad, but it can also still be operated. Those who are very enthusiastic about this approach have been known to wrap shelving all around the parameter of a room!

Should you build a suitcase railroad?

There is such a thing as a suitcase railroad layout. This is best used with the Z scale model trains, because they are very small. A little world can be developed and displayed within a suitcase and easily transported. These are very popular at model train shows all over the world!

What about the backdrop?

This is a very important step. Having a good background can set the whole tone for your model railroad layout. Many experts do suggest that you start with this step after designing your layout. Why? because you need to get the right size, and you can model the colors in your background to facilitate your model train layout.

You can pick from a number of scenes by using an online service and they will print them up for you with the dimensions that you specify, although this can be a little pricey. You can also do what many railroaders do and paint your own backdrop. This is usually featured on a backing wall of some sort. A model train backdrop is an important thing to start with first though, if you are going to include this piece.
